Kyra Gracie Uncovered: A Short Film

September 10, 2011  |  Events, Practice  |  Comments Off

This short film, the full version of the Interview with Kyra Gracie video, shot in Aug-Sept 2011, features Kyra like never before. An in-depth interview is cut with extensive footage of her training and rolling, only weeks out from ADCC 2011.

The interview includes:
- How it was to grow up a part of the famous Gracie family
- How her uncles tried to dissuade her from pursuing a career in jiu-jitsu, going so far as to tell her to quit
- How she’s inspired a new generation of “Gracie girls”
- Details of her plans to start a family

The line of questioning in this interview was inspired by and borrowed from the project work of Jeanne Chun, a health and physical education teacher, yoga instructor and Crossfit instructor from New York city, who visited Rio de Janeiro in July/August 2011 with the assistance of Fund For Teachers.

Fight Gone Bad

“Fight Gone Bad” Fundraiser

On September 17, 2011, CrossFitters from around the world will come together to endure 17 minutes of one of our most grueling workouts in honor of those men and women who have given a lifetime of service and sacrifice. For 17 minutes, we will push ourselves further, challenge ourselves deeper, feel the doubt and wonder if we can make it, but then remember why we are there and appreciate fully those who we wish to honor. We turn to you, our community of friends and family, to join us by donating what you can or what you are inspired to give to two phenomenal organizations that provide immediate and measurable support without waste or delay. The heart of an athlete can change the game. The soul of an athlete can change the world. Will you support my 17 minutes?

This event raises money for The Special Operations Warriors Foundation, CrossFit Kids, and Camp Patriot.

Please support my 17 minutes by donating on Jeanne’s Fundraising Page under the “Donate” tab.

Thank you for your support!

Interview with Kyra Gracie

August 16, 2011  |  Events, Practice  |  Comments Off

Jeanne’s Fund for Teachers summer grant fellowship brought her to Rio de Janeiro, Brazil to interview top athletes and coaches to explore factors that motivate female students to participate in sports and compete as athletes. In the following interview with Kyra Gracie, the most well-known black belt in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, Kyra responds to Jeanne’s research project questions, including:

How did your teachers motivate you when you started to learn Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu?

Interview with Kyra Gracie: Part 1

Kyra talks about her early years in the sport, tricks that her teachers and family used to motivate her to train, and reveals that far from helping her achieve greatness, many of her family actually tried to dissuade her from competing!

The line of questioning in this interview was inspired by and borrowed from the project work of Jeanne Chun, a health & physical education teacher, yoga instructor, and Crossfit trainer from New York City, who visited Rio de Janeiro in July/August 2011 with the assistance of Fund for Teachers.
